Elefantastiskt 2009
29/07/09 09:29 Filed in: Other
This weekend I attended the Elefantastiskt event in Karlsborg here in Sweden.

It was two awesome days of RC flying despite the windy weather.
A highlight of the meeting was when I tried dropping a RC converted Multiplex Fox from the EZ-Stick.

I met a lot of great people and had the best of times!

The Extra is done

I just finished building the Extra300. It was a pretty simple build and not much to worry about. The All Up Weight landed at 352 grams which is not light but not heavy either.

I look forward to flight testing it.

I'm mentioned on ATTF!

I’m mentioned on the very well known AllThingsThatFly podcast!
24 minutes and 10 seconds into episode #102 Diggs mentions my youtube show episode 1 and episode 2 as “Funny as hell”.
He is also kind enough to plug this site! After that he mentions my Multiplex Blizzard as “... One of the coolest paint scheme I’ve seen yet on a Blizzard”

A big thank you to all the guys at ATTF!

Progress on the Extra300

I’m almost finished with the Extra300 from RCPowers. The only things that remain is to mount the ESC, receiver and battery.

My prize has arrived
My prize from the competition on the FPV-Community forums just arrived in my mailbox!

The quality of this pan/tilt unit from GlobeFlight is excellent. The panning servo is located higher that on any other pan/tilt unit I’ve seen for the Twin Star. It’s also possible to look straight down thanks to the different tilt mechanism. All parts are made from glass fiber and are very strong and light. The whole unit weights 60 grams as seen in the picture. Now I only need a HS-81 size servo to be able to test this ting out.

I'm sending back the HD camera

The homepage where I got the Aiptek AHD300 said that it could do 720p in 60fps but that was not true. Apparently there is another model called the AHD300 PLUS that has this capability. So I sent back the AHD300 and instead I’m getting a AHD200 for half the price. It can “only” record in 1280*720p at 30fps compared to the 1440*1080p 30fps of the AHD300, but for me that is not worth two AHD200’s.
But before I sent the AHD300 back, I made a few test videos
Be sure to watch the comparison videos between the KX171 and the AHD300

FPV HD Camera has arrived

Behold! The future is here!
I’m proud to present the Aiptek AHD300 Full HD Camcorder:

The camera empty weights 148 g according to my scale and with battery and SD card it weights in at 183 grams.
The plan is to take it apart and strip it of all unnecessary parts to make it as light as possible. I will also replace the connection between the CMOS sensor board and the main board with a ribbon cable to make it easier to pan/tilt. I will also post some video samples later on.

New personal altitude record
17/07/09 15:25 Filed in: FPV
I was out testing how the camera reacted to the green nose I gave it. The results were good, the camera didn’t under expose the ground as much. But whilst I was flying around I felt like climbing a little. Since I didn’t have that much juice left in the battery I had to settle at 1114 meters which happen to be a personal record. The Twin Star is far superior to the Easy Star when it comes to climbing.

I love FPV flying.

RCPowers Extra300
15/07/09 19:26 Filed in: Projects
I’ve started work on a RCPowers Extra300. This is going to be my first ever 3D airplane.

I like the simplicity of the kits that RCpowers produce. The fewest number of parts with no unnecessary cuts. I like it. I wonder how it will fly... and how long it’s going to last since I made it out of depron.
Anyway here is the build log

This was my first ever youtube show! I plan on making goofy stuff and sharing them with you in this fashion, and I hope you will enjoy it.
In this show I equip my EZ-Stick with a bomb drop device, and I try to drop potatoes and eggs from the air on a target.
For those of you that want to make a bomb drop device of your own, here is how to: Read More...
Rainy days...
09/07/09 14:14 Filed in: Other
It has been raining on and of for several days now here in Sweden and the weather forecast does not look good; rain for all of next week too. I sincerely hope that they are wrong.

But there is something good in all that is bad; My wife is letting me buy an Aiptek AHD 300 full HD Camcorder for FPV flying! And she is aware that I will take it apart and remove and desolder all components I don’t need, to save weight. I love her for letting me do what I love (and buying expensive toys)

A guide to making your own antenna
07/07/09 16:51 Filed in: Other
Many people have asked me how to improve the range of their 900 or 1300 MHz video link, so I wrote a guide to making your own whip antenna that can greatly improve the efficiency and range of these systems.
You can click here to read it.

I hope that it can help improve the range for you people that use the stock antenna on your 900/1300 MHz video link.

I've got a green nose
06/07/09 10:03 Filed in: FPV
I’ve been planning on painting the nose of my FPV Twin Star in a darker color for quite a while now and finally i got an opportunity this weekend. I was fixing some rust on my Clio -01 and while the paint was drying on the car, I took the same color and sprayed the nose of the airplane:

When painting Elapor be sure to spray a thin layer from a distances and let it dry first so that the propellent of the spray paint doesn’t eat the foam. Now you have a protective layer and can lay on a thicker layer of paint.

3 layers of paint later. I like this color.
So why do you want a dark color for the nose of your FPV airplane?
The answer is that the exposure of the camera gets fooled by the white foam to underexpose (picture gets darker), which in the worst case scenario means that you cant see the ground. And the thing that is most important to be able to see, while flying FPV, is the ground.
A simple fix to this problem is to make the nose of the plane darker, thus getting the cameras autoexposure to make the picture brighter. Well see in the next video if it works.

I'm going to be a reviewer!

I was surfing around the various forums and I found that I had recently received a PM from one of the administrators on the FPV-Community forums. Naturally I started reading it; He complimented me on my website and my FPV flying, I was very flattered so I read on, He wanted to know if I wanted to start a cooperation with their site and become a product reviewer for their review section!
I hope this is the beginning of a long lasting cooperation between our sites, and I hope I get a lot of stuff to review ;)
