I’ve been wanting to build one of the Flitetest foamies for some time now, and have decided on the FT Pun Jet (because it is small and simple). I will of course crash it on first flight.
I’m having a hard time locating the foam to use? Do any one know the specifications, and where to get it in Europe? I figure it will be about ten times as expensive in Europe, because that is just the way it works, but shipping from Flitetest in the US is even more expensive, and takes a long time.
4 May, 2015 at 13:05 #139502maParticipantI wanted to do the same but I never find foam board in France.. I have seen some kind of board that looks like foam borad but it’s very expensive and crac a lot easier than foam board… I think there is a article on Flite test, something like Australian foam board with a lot of link in it π
I personally went for a Tiny trainer to build with my fiancΓ©e π But the shippement is really expensive (almost 30$ to France)
4 May, 2015 at 13:10 #13951TimParticipantFlitetest announced plans to manufacture and sell their own foam globally. Heard this in one of their podcasts. But i don’t know when this will happen.
You can find more discussion on this and some alternatives in this Thread:

DAVID! Wake up, I’m talking to you π

6 May, 2015 at 15:08 #14014FreakazoidParticipantIs there anything to consider when using the foam from modulor? Did you use the flitetest plans right away or did you change anything? I thought about building the pun jet as well π
6 May, 2015 at 20:16 #14018Chris7485ParticipantI recently build the FT Spitfire out of 6 mm depron. It’s easy to get at the local hardware store and about 1,20 β¬ a piece (ca. 100 x 45 cm).
For more strength I use ironing film from a laminator machine. This film is on a roll with 150 m so lots of film to iron. Works pretty good and you can purchase this stuff at amazon. Also the film is really lightweight.
Just use some sandpaper to roughen the depron surface befor appling the lamination. The original FT plans are good enough for the build, just mind the diffrent thickness of the depron which is 6 mm and foam board is about 4 mm I think. You can even apply decals between the depron and the lamination.

11 May, 2015 at 15:45 #14156cenkoParticipanti tried the modulor.de foamboard and have to say it is quite heavy and the paper does not come off so easy and is quite thick. I heaven’t had the chance to get my hands on DT FB myself but found these data on the internet:
DT FB: 0.19 g per sq inchThe modulor FB is 0.31g per square inch
therefore like chris7485 i’ve used 6mm extruded Polysyrene sheets from the local hardware store. It’s called Climatec and comes with 0.13g per sq in.
I use simple packing tape to cover it. So far i’ve bulid a FT NutBall/Snowball, FT Old Fogey and Old Speester. My first builds with modulor foamboard were quite heavy and wouldn’t fly good with the recomended power setup
BTW: +1 for the european distributor Mr. Windestal
P.S. I think FliteTest is recently not going a good road with FT Extra and without Chad and David and less Josh (the other one). Just my 2 cents.12 May, 2015 at 09:03 #14193FreakazoidParticipantThanks for the info danno242000. When time is ripe I’ll definitely build something with the modulor foam. But for now, I have to learn how to fly planes on my bixler 2 first ;).
12 May, 2015 at 10:41 #14195TerjeModeratorI managed to find some promising 5mm A2 foam board at Tutein&Koch in central Copenhagen π
A A2 sheet (594x420x5mm) weighs 136g, and costs $5. They carry A1 as well, at $9.50.
Another Copenhagen local source might be Creas.
12 May, 2015 at 10:56 #14196danno242000Participantbixler2 is a good way to start, that is how i started. good beginner plane, takes alot of beating, and still flies with tons of hotglue and tape…i broke nearly everything on the bixler and when i was done with it, it weight double just because of tape and glue.
nice plane, fun times. ????
flitetest has a couple of good beginner planes as well so no need to wait with building planes.12 May, 2015 at 11:17 #14197TerjeModeratorI had a Bixler2. Liked it but it decided to break into 2 pieces. Glued it back together, but it pulled a “Pet Cemetery” on me, and nested in a tree.
Now I have the AXN Floater Jet sitting at home, waiting for a maiden π – I really like the look of the AXN π
12 May, 2015 at 16:37 #14205FreakazoidParticipantHa π . Nice to hear, that you guys had similar experiences with the plane. I flew about 8 lipos so far and crashed pretty often. The nose was completely ripped off and so were the wings (in different crashes). My epoxy usage increased dramatically π . I hope the repairing-flying time ratio will soon become a little better ;).
Sorry for drifting away from the subject of this topic π
