have look for joshua bardwell’s videos on youtube- he has a review of currently flight controllers from a few months ago. He’d recommend the rev5

The only thing that sucks about the rev5 is it only having 2 uarts- one for usb and one for serialrx = no other peripherals. For me thats not a big deal…

If you are keen on a modern board the xracer is meant to be good and pretty affordable- not sure if it supports triflight or not- assume so?

What did you change to calibrate it ‘a little’?

Have you run the ESC calibration routine- I.e …

    1. transmitter OFF
    2. props off
    3. full throttle on all motors in motors tab (use the all motors slider)
    4. plugin battery
    5. wait a few seconds (depends on tones actually- which is different depending if you are running blheli or simonk on your escs)
    6. quickly drag to zero thottle all motors
    7. remove battery

Also- make sure you’ve calibrated your accelerometer and you have the correct board orientation- does the diagram move correctly when you move the quad – it should be crisp and responsive.

PS be careful spinning your motors to full throttle with your props off – there’s no drag & cooling from the props so just do it in short burst

    Blheli calibration tones:

Have you set min throttle correctly and calibrated the escs?

Have you checked each motor individually in the motor tab?

Can you describe the problem a bit more- what do you mean ‘it works sometimes but usually not’?

If I was ordering replacements I’d just fork out a bit extra and go for better escs- not sure what.. possibly the littlebee

    Hi Guys,

Is the sound from first video normal?

Any other recommendations before I get a replacement ESC?

    Hi again

    Heres an update.

Think i’ve narrowed it down to a faulty esc. Using motor tester, same problem with a different sized motor. Even pulled out the faulty esc and stuck a different esc (afro) to eliminate wiring issues

Ive examined the esc and cant see anything physically wrong with it.

Ignoring the esc issue for a sec… Just wanted to confirm this motor sounds correct think its a working motor but sounds very different to same motor on simonk. Is the screetching noise from the braking feature of blheli?

    https://youtu.be/lltIBgR8UqI

Here is a video from a different motor on a different (afro) simonk esc- sounds the same as the rcexplorer motor when put on the afro esc but i didnt make a video.

    Thanks

Okay, so updated to blheli 14.1, same behaviour.

Its pretty strange- it was working okay for about 30 secs then i started reving it up+down and it started jittering. Then it was permanently jittering through the whole motor tester range

So I guess its an esc / motor issue 🙁

Okay get the same problem with a motor tester so that eliminates triflight / betaflight. So must be motor/ esc

I’ll try flashing blheli next starting with faulty one.

I made 2 videos – first one is faulty, second is working one. Using motor tester. At the end of the faulty vid i was cranking the speed to near full and it just wasn’t rotating properly.

Thats the RC receiver not transmitter- Hitec TX/RX is meant to be very good too, from what I’ve read.

    Hi mate.

I’m relatively new too so here is some advice from me recently learning (I built a 250 quad with Naze32 & almost finished my Tri-Mini). Note this is just my (novice) opinion!

In terms of the Tri-copter (versus a 250 quad) – one issue you may find (if you are a scrub like me) is the lack of info on the internet. So these forums are really your friend! Stuff like working out how to reverse the tri’s servo from CLI was a pain to find (my googling probably needs work) and working out the motor outputs from NAZE32 board – since I’m using an old Naze board. Its when stuff doesn’t work quite as it should that it gets hard. The normal assembly is a piece of cake.

Take your time & find the right gear- don’t rush decisions or tradeoffs just because something is in stock. Same with initial test flights- ensure everything is 100% before trying to fly it to avoid crashing and breaking bits.

For the battery- this one (not linked in your post) was what Dave recommended (its a bit cheaper than your option – and if you calculate the number of required Amps for the ESCs should be enough to avoid brownouts.)

Obviously you need a decent charger too (again do your research- lots of gotchas)

For the goggles- I recommend getting the quanum goggles. They are cheap… and you can always upgrade later and they can be a set for a friend.

You’ll obviously need a transmitter/receiver to go with that- pretty cheap on HK- ensure you get 32 channels.

I need to get a decent transmiter and receiver. My local shop has a nice Spektrum DX6 that I was going to get, but it doesn’t support PPM(at least I don’t think it does). David recommends using PPM in the build video, and I like not having so many extra wires everywhere. Should I just go with Spektrum and whatever receiver they use, or should I keep looking?

Probably the biggest mistake I made was getting a Spektrum radio – I went the the local RC store and the guy was like ‘you need this one’. I should have researched online first- but trusted them as experts.

Suggest you research this yourself as you may find spektrum is for you…. just don’t rush into it or necessarily listen to your local hobby shop as (in my area) they aren’t really into Multirotors – more traditional RC.

If I was going to do it again, I would go for a Taranis radio with FrSky D4R-II receiver.

    Transmitter (example link!!!)

    http://www.frsky-rc.com/product/pro.php?pro_id=24

    The receiver is:
    * small (this is really important on the mini tri)
    * relatively cheap
    * programmable (think you need an arduino or similar)
    * diversity aerials
    * good quality product – not some 3rd party thing.
    * PPM (less wires – less to fail, less weight, tidier, etc)
    * telemetry – rssi, voltage, etc

(you can get some / all of these features on your receiver with a Spektrum setup… but there seems to be a tradeoff)
    * small- you can use a ‘satellite’ receiver (official product) – but you need a full receiver to pair it so it gets pricey plus doesn’t have ppm – i think
    * cheap – spektrum stuff is expensive. There are 3rd party ones like OrangeRx and LemonRx that are cheaper but people have reported quality issues & harder to get info on these

I use this receiver with my DX8i spektrum- gives me telemetry and PPM. But its LARGE and I worry that it may brown-out (as not official).

The transmitter’s benefits (depending on model, I guess):
    * upgradable / can use open source software
    * voice + vibrate
    * widely used – easy to find help
    * more advanced than spektrum- can do some really cool stuff in the software

    Thanks for your replies!

Sounds like a bad esc. David did say inspect the esc for solder balls before using in his build video. I’m wondering if that is the case.

I did check – couldn’t see any damage or bits of loose solder….

If you have removed the thin black wire that is supposed to connect ESC ground and FC ground, put it back.

    I never removed this 🙁

So not worth trying to upgrade blheli from the sounds of things?

I’m going to try get hold of a servo tester, to eliminate the naze board – not using the naze frame – separate naze board.
