I run those motors on 4S with 9*5 carbon fibre props and I find it underpowered.

It’s OK but after flying a quad for a while and going back to the tri after a few months, it is so slow to fly. You have to think so much further ahead because you don’t have the thrust to get out of some situations.

My first attempt at a video taken from my V3. Flying around the river running through my town in summer after unusually high rainfall.

My first FPV video taken from my FT Mini Arrow. Love that little thing but it’s now seen better days. It’s broken its back a couple of times now and is just about beyond repair – besides, I need a new video transmitter for my tricopter so I may have to rob it from the Arrow.

When you balanced your props did you balance the hubs as well as the blades? I found that balancing the hubs made a bigger difference than I would have thought.

I use a Skylark OSD3. Not sure I could recommend it.

It basically does the same thing as the EZOSD and was substantially cheaper, but it came with a faulty GPS unit (which I couldn’t claim under warranty) and is a bit of a hassle to set up properly – I still haven’t calibrated the amps and voltage accurately yet.

As Siclair said, it is good having the extra information available to you but I would probably go for the EZOSD rather than the Skylark if you want to go down that path. Or go for the Minimosd if you don’t need as much info.

    Thanks for that.

I have a couple of sheets of foam left over from another build that are the same size as dollar tree foam board so I’m guessing they should be enough.

How many sheets of foam does it take to build the FT Racer?

With it suddenly rolling to one side it just sounds like something failed to me – broken prop, failed ESC etc.

Well I had a lot more success with the KK board and Davids settings than I have with the Naze board.

I played around trying to tune the KK a bit but ended up going back to Davids recommended settings and it worked great for me. I was getting quite comfortable doing flips and rolls and generally flying quite aggressively until I crashed it and decided to rebuild with the integrated Naze.

The naze has been pretty disappointing for me in that I’m having trouble identifying what it’s actually doing – it doesn’t seem to be consistent. It drifts and yaws all over the place which is really noticable in FPV and actually puts a bit of a downer on FPV for me – I only have a couple of hours so far.

Having said that I haven’t tried any tuning at all mainly due to lack of time but I’m not confident I will improve anything because it doesn’t have a consistent problem.

Siclair, adjusting the acc trim worked perfectly for me.

My tri wasn’t drifting badly but definitely wasn’t right and it took a lot of correction to get it correct. Probably at least 20 increments I think.

    One other thing.

Did you have the red wires from the ESCs connected to the Naze?

I fried mine by leaving all 3 connected which works ok on the KK board but the Naze doesn’t like it.

Probably not the issue in your case but just a suggestion.

    Awesome, thanks Leo!

Flying out to work for a week shortly but I’ll get onto that once I’m home again.

    Thanks everyone.

I’ll definitely be sticking with the v3 for a while yet but I think I’m convinced that a mini tri is the way to go when the time comes.

Plenty of saving $$$ to do in the meantime!

All the bars in the receiver tab sit bang on 1500 and only fluctuate by 1 or maybe 2. I still have the deadband set at 10.

No I haven’t tried the pitch trim in self level settings. How much should I try to start with?

Ha ha you are most wise Terje-san!

I did think about a cheap ZMR250 style quad but then again I would probably spend more on building that than replacing broken parts on a mini tri.

Would you agree with me that the V3 has a few weak points and is a bit fragile, or have I just been a bit unlucky?
